Sri Lanka started their World Cup campaign losing against
the New Zealand team. They were in back foot and were not in the teams to
qualify for the next rounds. The players were out of form and also did not play
to their strength in the practice games. But, everything changed for the Lankan
tigers as the left hand legendary player SANGAKKARA coming to form. He started
to play a steady game that showed why he is one of the class players of
cricket. With no much of risk taken he scored runs that helped the Lankan’s to
win the match easily. The first century came against the Bangladesh team in
which he ended scoring 105 runs without losing his wicket till the end. The
second century was a class one scored against the English team. He was not out
after making 117 runs and chased score more than 300 runs with 9 wickets in
hand. The third century went in vain as they lost against the Australian team
in spite of the start they were given by Sangakkara after the first wicket fell
early in the innings. They were close to victory in the match as the injury of
Chandimal went in favor of Australia. The record century came against the
Scotland team in which he scored 124 runs helping the team to score 363 runs.
They won the match by 148 runs one of the big wins for the Sri Lankan team in
World cup matches. Sangakkara has become
the leading run scorer in the tournament with 496 runs. The second place goes
to his fellow team mate DILSHAN.
