Sri Lanka won the toss and elected to bat first against
Scotland at Hobart. The first wicket fell early in the inning as Lahiru
Thirimanni was out after scoring 4 runs of the bowling of A EVANS caught by P
Mommsen. Then Dilshan was joined by Sangakkara for a partnership of 195 runs
for the second wicket. Dilshan was the second man to fall after scoring 104
runs off 99 balls with 10 fours and a six. J Davey took the wicket of the
opener who was caught by C MacLeod. Sanga continued his form and scored his
fourth century of the World Cup from his 5 encounters. This is a new World Cup record set by the
left hander to give the Sri Lankan team a chance to play the Quarter Finals
easily. Angelo Mathews and Kusal Perera started to play shorts freely that took
the total more than 350 runs. They ended up scoring 363/9 in 50 over. MATHEWS
scored 50 in 20 balls which became the second fastest half century of this
World Cup after McCullum reaching in 18 balls.
Chasing a target of 364 runs to win the match
the Scottish openers lost their wicket early in the innings and was reduced to 44/3
in the 12th over. This match was having a mark of a one sided affair
from the start. Freddie Coleman and Preston Mommsen put on a century
partnership to have a small chance to reach the required target. But, it all
changed for the Sri Lankan team to come back strongly and take wickets in quick
succession. The opponents lost the last seven wickets for 54 runs and were
reduced to 215/10 in 43.1 over. L Malinga, Nuwan Kulashekara and new bowler
DushmanthaChameera were the pick of the bowlers taking 2, 3 and 3 wickets
respectively. Dilshan showed an all round performance by scoring a century and
picking a wicket for the team. Kumar Sangakkara was the man of the match for
his world record performance in the World Cup and the present match. Sri Lanka
won the match by 148 runs and moved to the second spot in points table with
Australia having one more game to play.
