It was a thriller finish that might have gone both the sides
till the last ball of the 20th over was bowled. Punjab
was batting with 5 runs to win the match from the last ball. Axar Patel faced
the last ball of the innings with Faulkner being the bowler of Rajasthan
Royals. Patel just missed on a six and could score only four runs that ended in
a tie.
In the absence of George Bailey, the captaincy was taken by
Virendra Sehwag. Punjab won the toss and
elected to field first with Shaun Marsh coming back for Bailey and Miller
replacing Perera. Rajasthan team started their innings well with a good opening
partnership between Watson and A Rahane for the first wicket. They had a first
wicket partnership of 95 with Watson falling for 45 runs who was stumped by
Saha of the bowling of Axar Patel. But, Rajasthan batsmen did not stop to score
runs as they made 100 runs of last 10 overs. They scored 91 runs from the first
ten overs. The innings was continued Hooda and then by Karun Nair. A Rahane was
dismissed after scoring 74 runs from 54 balls by hitting 6 to the boundary and 2
over the rope. Axar was the pick of the bowler for the Kings with two important
wickets picked by the left arm spin bowler. The total was 191 /6 in 20 overs
with the Punjab team needing 192 to win from
20 overs. Punjab team started their bad form
by losing wickets early in the innings. It was Shaun Marsh who controlled the
innings for the team and helped the team come out of the disaster. Kings XI
were 59/3 from 8.4 overs with danger man Maxwell back to the pavilion after
scoring only 1 run. The fourth wicket partnership helped the team from a
collapse. Rajasthan team made a come back in the game by dismissing Marsh and
Miller. At 166/6 the batting team needed another 26 runs from 2.1 overs. Morris
had a good 19th over to put the Rajasthan team on the front foot with A Patel
and Johnson on crease. Punjab needing 5 runs
from a ball could manage only 4 runs of it and tied the match.
This became the first super over game in this year IPL.
Kings XI Punjab batted first and lost the wicket of Miller in the first ball of
the over by Moriis. Then Shaun Marsh continued his form by scoring 15 runs in
the remaining 5 balls give the bowlers some thing to defend. It was the repetition
of the first innings as Watson was bowled by Johnson of the first ball. The
second ball was a no ball and it was hit for a four by Steve smith. By Faulkner’s
run out ended the game with Kings XI Punjab winning the match. This ended the
winning streak of Rajasthan team and received the first defeat of the tournament.
