SHAKUNTALA DEVI – A SOUL OF MATHEMATICS

The shocking truth of me after watching the movie is how not I knew about a great mathematician who was born in India. She was called the “Human Computer”. An inspiration for all women who lead a life of her own and not come into the normal stereotypical show of a mother, wife and a daughter in our country who, controlled by the structure of life. Even with the outside world there are less a mathematics generous who is a female. The dialogue would impress you when SHAKUNTALA DEVI says, “Are you surprised to see a woman on stage for Mathematics than a usual song or dance”.

The movie starts with a criminal case filed against Shakuntala Devi by her own daughter. The reason for this is unknown and who a daughter puts a case on her own mother. This is answered in a two hours seven minutes story line. The journey starts from the childhood of the Human Computer. Brother identified her talent and then show cased it by her Father on stage. She starts to hate her mother by an incident happened in the family. The storyline just flips between the ages, it goes to 1954 and then again back to 1999 and so on. The edits have done a good job with the flips marking a question in one period and the answer in other period.

The casting done by the crew has done a good job with the actors delivering their characters perfectly. Vidhya Balan as SHAKUNTALA has given her skills to deliver an award winning performance. Sanya Malhotra as Anupama Banerji also has played a support for this beautiful movie. Two other characters who just nailed it from their characters were Amit Sadh as Anupama’s Husband, Jisshu Sengupta, the husband of SHAKUNTALA and Father of Sanya Malhotra.

The Director Anu Menon has done a satisfactory job by giving an inspirational storyline to fall in love for Maths. Music by Sachin-Jigar and Karan Kulkarni does not collectively remain in your mind. The writers with an inspirational and feminism sketch has dictated the scenes in perfection, as one of the writers is Director herself. Cinematography by Keiko Nakahara has freshened the location of different periods of the film.

Now, let me spill out some negatives in this biopic. The second half little dragged with the dramatic sentimental scene that reminds you of making you cry movies that establishes the relationship with a forcible sentiment scene.

To conclude, this movie interrogates the dearness of a mothers love for daughter, tested with of her own huge success that comes in between the both.
