Let me start with unknown's quote "Good actors are not always the superstars and Superstars are not always Good Actors".
As the COVID 19 pandemic is increasing in the country, the
debate of nepotism is also making headlines. The social media is now the place
of argument about the scary nepotism issue. Each field has nepotism that makes
the outsiders work harder to reach a place of their dream. It is easy for a
star kid to get a change in a movie with no much hard work. However, the
question is about the trouble faced by the real talent.
The Bollywood industries debate of Nepotism has gone ugly
with, one side, the team of outsiders just poking the wrong things happened in
the past due to the powerful people of the industry. On the other, the
so-called insiders are trying to abolish the comments thrown on them. In this
debate, even the outsiders targeted for not supporting the argument.
This all debate came to the limelight after the unexpected
suicide of SUSANTH SINGH RAJPUT due to depression. The question is “Is the
depression happened due to nepotism and the big production houses negligence to
not treat the real talent fairly.”
The argument of nepotism triggered in the MALAYALAM industry
with a Facebook post by actor Neeraj Madhav. The Gauthamante Radham actor
wrote, “The distinction begins when senior actors are served tea in glass cups
while the rest are served in steel cups. Drinking tea in paper cups are fine
too, but the hitch lies when they impose the difference.” This made the AMMA
(Association of Malayalam Movie Artist) association come in front to have clear
details of the statement given by the actor. However, the debate did not go to
the next level, as the argument of nepotism was not made big in the social
forum.
Let us see if this statement made by Neeraj Madhav a hidden
truth in the industry that is not allowed to come out or is just a statement
made for attraction digger.
To be a viewer or a follower of Malayalam cinema, it is a
difficult industry to survive as the movies from early 80’s or even before
that, was all multi starer's. You may find legends like Madhu and Prem Nazir
seen in a single movie having equal space. Be it after the Prem Nazir and Madhu
era, you may see a bunch of actors in a single movie. It is still great in this generation to see those movies that had
story line as the hero rather than the actors. The story telling was impressive
as the new comer introduced with a big star.
Insider Show
Let us star from Prem Nazir’s son Shanawas prem Nazir, who
was introduced in a 1981 movie Prema Geethangal directed by Balachandra Menon.
Even with acting in more than 50 movies, he has not made it big. The reason was
not that of him being a good actor, but the multi starrer movies affected his
growth. One more big reason is the
comparison of acting with his Father Prem Nazir.
Now coming to Pranav Mohanlal, son of “The
Complete Actor” Mohanlal. Yes, he was introduced as a child artist in his
father’s film Onnaman. He won Kerala
State film Award for Best Child Artist for Punarjani.
He returned to the film industry as an assistant director and finally a hero in
the movie Aadhi. As it is none that Awards are just a dramatic improvisation of
a dumb team, the SIIMA Award for Best Debut 2018, Malayalam was given to Pranav
Mohanlal for his role as Aadhi. The movie went on grab money in the box office.
His second movie Irupathiyonnaam Noottaandu was a flop
show. But, need to see if he can make it big in the future. His father would
always be the supporting head for him as it is an obvious debate of “helping
your son in his success”.
On the other end of introduction, Dulquer Salman (Mammotty’s
Son) was introduced in a low budget new comer directorial Second Show in the
year 2012. He just nailed it in that slight negative shaded character. He again
proved himself in the movie Ustad Hotel making him a better actor. The audience
just fell for his roles in ABCD: American Born Confused Desi and Bangalore
Days. An offbeat movie like Kammatipaadam took him to the next level of
stardom. He is presently one of the busy actors of Malayalam industry and has
done other regional films with big budget production houses. His big
achievement was when he acted with one of the all-time great of Bollywood, Irfan
Khan in Karwaan. The character of his was not given because he was a Star Kid,
but, his establishment as an actor down south.
Prithviraj Sukumaran & Indirajeet Sukumaran children of
late Sukumaran had good scripts to display their talent and did so. Of the both
actors, Prithviraj is in the front line as an established actor with the
performance in movies like classmates, Celluloid, Indian Rupee and Ennum Ninte
Moideen. He hit the international market by directing Lucifer. The movie
Lucifer considered one of the big hits of Malayalam movies in the box office.
Fahad Fasil
An exception in this list of insiders is Fahad
Fasil. He had a debut under his father Fazil’s direction. The movie was
a flop in spite of Mammotty playing a guest role. This failure did not made the
actor to try more films. He decided to skip the movie industry and went back
for improving his acting skills and came back with anthology film Kerala Café.
Critically acclaimed Chaappa Kurishu in the 2011 just attained the public interest
and there was no stopping. Now, he is one of the top actors of the industry
with many awards under his name.
Outsider Show
Joju George
One of the top successful person in the industry with hardwork
more than a decade is Joju George. He started his film journey from the year
1995. After playing side role and some guest appearance in the movie, he was
given a role as Ayyapan in RajadhiRaja a Mammotty Starrer. He grabbed the
attention of the audience and gradually given good character role. He just
became one of the best actors of the industry through the movie JOSEPH. Hard
Work finally paid back with him having more than five movies in pipeline. He
will be debuting in Tamil movie in a Danush movie Jagame Thanthiram.
Jayasurya
This exceptional talent of Malayalam movie industry was in
the films from 1999. He started to journey as a background artist in Suresh
Gopi starrer Pathram. After three years of struggle, his breakthrough came in
the form of Oomanappenninu Uriyadappayan in the year 2002. Some of his other
appreciated movies were Classmates, Cocktail, Trivandrum Lodge, Iyobinte
Pusthakam, Aadu and Lukka Chuppi.
Nivin Pauly
One of the fast grown artist of the industry was Nivin
Pauly. Even with the outsider tag, he just entered the stardom within huge success within a span of
ten years. His journey started with Vineeth Sreenivasan Directorial Malarvaadi
Arts Club in the year 2009. The movie became a box office hit that recognised
his acting skills. He has many awards under his belt for the roles in Thattathin
Marayathu, 1983, Neram, Action Hero Biju and amany more. This talent grabbed attention internationally through
Geethu Mohandas directorail Moothon.
The other names in the list are Asif Ali, and Tovino Tomas
who has made it big in the industry even though they are outsiders.
Many actors, directors and singers introduced their children
in front of the camera and behind the camera as directors, scriptwriters, musicians
and singers. However, the people who had talent are in the industry rather than
an actor with no skill set becoming the star. This shows nepotism has helped
them to start their career in movies, but not to continue the show by cutting
down talent and blocking others career. The viewers in the Malayalam industry is
fixed to good scripts and better talent than a Star Kid’s show of dumb acting
skills. I think that, nepotism is just a little child in Malayalam movies compared to the so called big Bollywood stardom.
Therefore, to conclude, this is just my viewpoint on the
Nepotism in Malayalam film industry.
