The quote “Two’s Fight benefits the third” perfectly suits the Shoojit Sircar directorial “Gulabo Sitabo”. Movie revolves around the fight between the Fatima Mahal’s Owners husband Mirza (Amitabh Bachchan) and the tenant of the Mahal, Baankey Rastogi (Ayushmann Kurana). Between these two comes different characters making it more of an interesting tale of comical recipe. The well-written satire shows us the emotional and the greedy phase of people as per different situations.
Gulabo Sitabo is an interesting storytelling formula that is set at Lucknow. The fight between Mirza and Baankey Rastogi continues until a twist comes in the storyline when a person from government’s archeological department gets involved in the case of Fatima Mahal. Gyanesh Shukla(Vijay Raaz) comes in the story to occupy this 100 year building for archeological department. Baankey Rastogi falls for the words of Gyanesh Shukla(Vijay Raaz) and supports him in this process. Mirza is supported by the lawyer Christopher Clark (Brijendra Kala) for holding property from the government.
Each and every characterisation has been done well with the no hero or villain appearance. The characters are sketched out of the real life performances. In this Gulabo Sitabo world, all are selfish for their situations. On one side Mirza leads the way with his selfish behaviour against his tenants, waiting for his wife’s death to occupy the property and on the other side the stubborn tenants not willing to leave the house and increase the rent fixed by Mirza. Here, it is all about money than any relationship or love for others.
Amithabh Bachan has given one of the worth watching performance as Mirza. He has lived it to the fullest. Ayushmaan Kurana as Rastogi has also done a good job. The other two who has made more interesting is the government officer played by Vijay Raaz and the lawyer Brijendra Kala, who are always the best in any characters they play. To the special mention, the queens of this Shoojit Sircar ship are the owner of the Fatima Mahal, Fatima Begum played by Farrukh Jaffar and the sister of Baankey Rastogi Guddo acted by Srishti Shrivastava. Both the actresses has been the wall of this superbly scripted movie.
To point-out the negative aspect is its slowness that would make some of us bored. However, the background score by Shantanu Moitra helps you in coming back to the situation and skip a nap.
The main question of this movie is, will Mirza save Fatima Mahal from the government or will he loose it? The answer is to be see this 2 hrs 4 minutes classic that is available in Amazon Prime from June 12 2020.
