The first match of the World T20 was played between India
and New Zealand. Losing the toss India was sent to field first in a good spinning
track. The New Zealand batsmen found it difficult to bat on the spinning pitch
with wickets falling in each interval of time. The visitors were 35/3 from 6.5
over before a partnership of 29 runs for the fourth wicket helped the team to
post a better target at the end. Corey Anderson was the only batsman to take on
the Indian bowlers easily and score 34 runs. They ended the innings at 126 runs
losing 7 wickets in 20 over. All the bowlers except Hardik Pandya took one
wicket each for the country.
Chasing a target of 127 runs to win, Indian batsmen also
found it difficult to face the bowling of New Zealand spinners. Wickets were
tumbling like tracer bullet and could not play full quota of 20 overs. The team
was reduced to 43 for seven with Dhoni and Ashwin on screase. Partnership of 30
runs for the eighth wicket was the lone good partnership for the team. Finally
India was bowled out for 79 runs with 11 balls remaining. MS Dhoni was the highest
scorer with 30 runs from 30 balls with a four and a six. Mitchell Santner was
the outstanding bowler for the black caps with four wickets. Ish Sodhi also
picked three wickets for his team.
